2018 Year End Awards Part 1

Written by on December 31, 2018

We’ve had our lists now it is time for some individual awards. A reminder that to be eligible for these awards these songs had to be released in 2018.

She Shanties’ 2018 album Futtock Shrouds cemented their distinction as one of the top, if not the top, a cappella bands in the pirate community and the star of that album is “The Light From the Lighthouse”. A traditional gospel blues song, they do it justice in their rendition. Even to this day I am blown away by the song and look forward to more music from She Shanties.

This was the toughest decision this year when it came to awards. A special shout out to Pat Razket for their song “The Debt” Master Bones Jangle and the Voodoo Island Cannibals for “Funeral Dirge” as well as O’Craven’s own “Skull & Bones”; all of which were considered for this. In the end this song just resonates with me on a level that is hard to describe. Be it recorded or live it is always fantastic and I can’t wait to see what comes next from O’Craven.

I wanted, no needed, to make sure there was a special recognition for Sharks Come Cruisin & Penny Opry for their renditions of Roll Alabama Roll. It is an old traditional song and the only other band we have on the show who has done it is, She Shanties. The fact that two different bands from different coasts both released a version this year needs to be commended. Not only that it was released, but received our highest rating during album reviews. I’m not sure if I could pick which version I love the best and in the end may be why they are here and not under the Traditional song award. They both are beautiful songs from very different viewpoints and a great example of differing artistic interpretation.

Tomorrow we will announce our Album and Band of the year awards, stay tuned.
